A History of Butler County Part One

In Part 1 of this special two-part series, we welcome Tommy Hines, Executive Director at South Union Shaker Village, to help us explore the early history of Butler County, Kentucky. Located at the crossroads of the Green and Barren Rivers, Butler County played a critical role in the development of western Kentucky.

We trace the county’s origins from its creation in 1810, examining how geography, river systems, and early settlement patterns shaped its growth. From pioneer homesteads and agricultural development to the challenges of frontier life, Butler County’s story offers a window into the broader experience of early Kentuckians.

Join us as we dig into the formation of local communities, early industries, and the county’s connection to key events in the state’s frontier past. Don’t miss Part 2, where we explore Butler County through the Civil War era and beyond.
